So you want to Start your Natural Hair Journey....or Need a Little Help
Updated: Feb 15, 2020
If you're just starting your natural hair journey first I would like to say congratulations! If you're just looking for advice I would like to assure you that there's nothing wrong with needing a little help on what to do. Now all hair is different and not everything will work the same or at all for everyone. However, I would like to give some tips that might you help on your natural hair journey.
Test out a Variety of Products
Now this may be a bit on the expensive side, however, this is important. You will be able to see what works for your hair and what doesn't work. Word of mouth is okay and all, but, you have to use a product instead of hearing about to see if it's right for you and your hair. This is also a great way to learn about your hair like what type of oils are good for your hair, what kind of moisturizer don't work for you etc. Another big thing is you NEVER want to get your hair use to the same old products. Even though you might have found your holy grail products constant use of them may cause them to stop working as good in your hair, so be versatile and try new products.
Youtube is your BestFriend
It's no secret that you can learn literally any and everything on YouTube. When I first started my natural hair journey I spent hours on YouTube looking at people with my similar hair type and hair situations. There are tons of videos on how to style hair, moisturize hair, trim hair and so much more at your finger tips. Use it to your advantage and learn hands on.
Don't Over Manipulate your Hair
Let your hair be!!! And I can't stress this fact enough. Your hair likes to be left alone to breathe and just be hair. You don't need to do your hair in these fancy unnecessary styles each day. Yeah they are cute but it stresses your hair out being touched and played with too often. I personally put in a hairstyle and keep it in for a week or so touch it up once and moisturize it every other day. (if I'm just rocking my all natural look) However, the same goes for those who always get their hair done. Let your hair get a break from the braids, twists or however you decide to do your hair. Always throwing it in a style will stress your hair as well if it doesn't breathe for a week or so.
Oil and Moisturizer, Undefeated Duo
This is HIGHLY important, and this is basic but this needs to be mentioned. Your hair needs a water based moisturizer (water also works) every other day or when needed. Brittle hair breaks and splits and is not good for hair health at all. You'll know if your hair is brittle if you hear a crunch, the crunchier the more brittle it is and unhealthy. After you moisturize you need to come with the oil next. The oil locks in the moisture so it doesn't leave your hair so those curls stay juicy and poppin. Be sure to use an oil that doesn't weigh your hair down but also penetrate your curls.
This is the biggest key of all. Your hair journey is different from the next person and needs to be treated differently. Your hair is just as unique as your finger print, not even your relatives have hair exactly like yours, similar but not exact. Your hair has different needs, growth rates and textures so what works for someone else may not work for you. Remember that your holy grail product may be someones least favorite product or not work for them. Adhere to the needs of your hair and worry about your journey. Keep in mind that it's about the journey and embracing each stage of your hair not necessarily the end goal.
